Solid Scarlet Background #FF2400

Few color names arrive with as much luggage as scarlet: military coats, academic gowns, Hawthorne's infamous letter. Historically the word described fine cloth dyed with kermes and later cochineal, dyes costly enough that the color itself signaled rank. The modern hex, #FF2400, keeps the drama — full red with a sliver of orange heat.

That orange lean separates scarlet from crimson, its blue-leaning rival, and makes it feel louder and more forward. As a background it is best treated like a brass instrument: commanding in a title slide or poster, oppressive over long stretches. Gold and cream lend it ceremony; black lends it menace. There is no neutral way to use it.
